Choreography of failures

September 28, 2017

Text I created as an application for Solo Project Plus in Stary Browar Nowy Taniec in Poznań (Poland). I didn't get in to the project.

I fully realized the concept of the project!

I want to tell you a story

A story of failures

The story of a failure

A failure is an act or instance of failing or proving unsuccessful; lack of success;

nonperformance of something due, required, or expected

From the Business Dictionary, a failure is an event in which any part of an equipment or machine does not perform according to its operational specifications. Failures are classified into several categories: dependent failure, non-critical failure, random failure

My friend says that a failure is when you really want to say something and you’re saying it, you know what you mean, but your voice get stuck in your throat and your speech becomes just a chaotic performance. It happens in dance performances, sometimes.

A failure is when a man tells compliments to unknown woman, how beautiful she is and how much attracted he is to her body, but it happened that the woman is a feminist and she doesn’t give a fuck about her sex appeal

A failure is the previous sentence

A failure is when your educational level is really high, knowledge, universities, workshops, courses, skills and you go abroad to clean other peoples houses

A failure is when you apply for a project, Solo Project, that would be a realization of your choreography carrier’s dream and you don’t really have time to prepare because you were busy with two other life practices: love as a political resistance and radical honesty in your new house. And you fail there too, everyday.

Judith Halberstam says that a failure “forces us to face the dark side of life, love, and libido”

A pure failure was when Pati Smith was singing Bob Dylan’s song during Nobel Prize ceremony

A failure is when you have been learning dance for the half of your life and you have never learned how to do grand jete, but you still call yourself a dancer

In common understanding a failure is when someone creates a choreography piece without dance

A failure is when you have heard and thought all your life that you are bad at writing and you keep on doing it anyway

A failure is when you improvise all your life, improvise in dance, in life and everyone is so crazy about it, but you always have felt that this practice doesn’t work for you, but you try and try and try and you fail

You fail

You fail because you’re trying

You fail

In life

In relationships

In art

I fail

I am a failure

Creating art is a failure

Art is a failure

Failure is naive

Moreover

This place is a failure

This place is a failure and it’s beautiful

This place is a failure and it’s beautiful because it creates art in a structure that appreciates only success

The structure that is based on capitalistic competition, hierarchy, money, power

The structure that we humans created for ourselves, because we’re so afraid of failures

A failure is also a growing number of suicides committed in the most successful countries, countries that are developed the most and usually seen as the best countries to live in

A failure is human loneliness and separation in the world where theoretically connecting with other people and traveling are the easiest in the history of humankind

A failure is a crisis of masculinity in the world dominated and ruled by men

A failure is art

It’s an artistic act. Naive act of rebel. Act of resistance. Resistance to domination of the common understanding of success. Success is a contemporary mass/pop illusion.

But someone smarter than me said that also art is an illusion.
